Have you ever grabbed something quick from the refrigerator that led to a messy chain reaction of toppled items? Like the last crucial Jenga block just pulled from the stack, it was the lynch pin that was holding everything else in place?

The kitchen is the hub of the home, and the refrigerator is the vital piece that can make or break the functionality of it all. With multiple family members using it regularly, it can be tricky to put an organization strategy in place that everyone will follow.

No worries! I’ve got 5 steps for you that will ensure your refrigerator is living its best life—so you can live yours!

STEP 1 | Group Your Items

For regularly purchased items, group them together by category and create a designated spot for each category in your fridge. This will ensure everything you buy routinely is easy to find and has a place to be stored.

Consider creating a category for ingredients used in the meal plan for the week. Since everything will already be pulled together in one spot, it will expedite the cooking process. It will also keep items intended for meal prep from getting accidentally used or eaten beforehand.

PRO TIP | While grouping items together, go ahead and check those expiration dates and toss out any old, outdated items and start fresh!

STEP 2 | Adjust the Shelving

We don’t always think about rearranging the shelves in the refrigerator, but this can allow you to more effectively use every available inch of space. I recommend making sure each shelf has a couple of inches of headspace, giving you easy access to grab what you need. I understand this seems like a tedious process, but I can assure you of the benefits of having adequate space in all the right places. It makes a magnificent difference!

STEP 3 | Add Storage Bins

Add bins to keep everything orderly and clearly seen. There are so many fantastic options available. Consider open bins for grab-n-go items and lidded bins for smaller, stackable items. Lazy Susans are perfect for the back of your refrigerator, making those hard-to-reach spots easier to access and navigate!

PRO TIP | When unloading groceries, bring older items to the front of the bins (so they get used first) and put the new items in the back. This will keep food from getting lost and going to waste.

STEP 4 | Leave Open Space

Designate a shelf or area of the refrigerator to be flexible and open space. This can be used for leftovers or extra purchases that are not routinely bought.

Having flexible open space is a key factor in the success of any organization system long-term. Life is always changing, but if you’ve planned for flexible open space, you have the breathing room needed to go with the flow (and not overflow).

STEP 5 | Use Labels

Label each bin, shelf, and drawer so everyone can clearly see and remember where everything goes. Labeling is the glue that holds your organization system together, so don’t skip this step! It is vital, especially when you have multiple people accessing the refrigerator.

Refrigerators can be tricky spaces to keep organized, but if you follow these 5 steps you’ll be well on your way to a more effortlessly tidy fridge.
